No one can beat Hollywood when it comes to making films with animals in them. I remember films in my childhood - and there were quite a few of them - that had an Alsatian called Rin-tin-tin. This dog's acting was more impressive than a human's. Later, we got to see three or four other films with a collie called Lassie. It seemed that the director could make Lassie do just about anything. These trained dogs were famous stars in their own rights, and the money they earned was no less than what a real film star got. Their owners could easily make as much as a hundred thousand rupees from just one film.realised how reverently these animal-actors were treated when I happened to see the shooting of a film twenty years ago in Disney Studio in Hollywood. The main character in this film was a large dog.

I reached the studio to find that the shooting had not yet started;the camera man was getting the lights ready. It is customar y for actors to be present when the lights are customary arranged, for they have to show the cameraman how they'll walk, or where they'll stand, in a particular shot. In the case of very famous stars, this job is done by their stand-ins. A stand-in is usually a person who is physically similar to the real star. The stars themselves arrive only when the lights are ready and it is time to take a shot. 3 Here, in Disney Studio, I noticed that a few actors were moving about in the set, and on one side, standing quietly, was the protagonist - the same large dog.

The cameraman shouted to everyone to take their positions but the dog remained where it was. This puzzled me. Could it be that it was not required in the next shot? 4 Before I could ask someone, a strange thing happened. From nowhere appeared a little dwarf, followed by another man carrying a hairy dog-skin. Then, to my perfect amazement, the dwarf went down on all the fours on a chalk mark on the floor, just like an animal, aped over him. Then he crawled

As soon as Tex and Indi walked in the door for their piano lesson, Tex asked, “May I please go first, Mr. Montoya? I want you to hear how much I’ve been practicing.” “No fair!” said Indi. “Tex got to go first last week! And I’ve been practicing, too.”“I’m glad you’ve both worked hard,” said Mr. Montoya. “And I have a new piece for you. It’s a duet, so you’ll both play at the same time. Let’s start with that. Then I’ll hear the pieces you’ve been learning.” “OK,” said Indi.Tex and Indi sat down at the piano. Mr. Montoya showed them their parts, and they tried playing together. They made lots of mistakes, but it was fun. Then they took turns playing the pieces they had practiced.After practicing the duet for a couple of weeks, the twins were ready to play it at their monthly piano recital. When they finished playing together, they bowed together, too.After Indi got back to her seat, her friend Kate leaned over and whispered, “That was great! You’re lucky you have a twin so you can play together.” “Thanks,” said Indi, smiling. “But you don’t need a twin to play a duet. If you come over for a playdate, I’ll teach it to you!” It was evening, and Meera and Kiran were quite hungry. “Would you like some samosas?” asked Ma. “Yes!” Meera and Kiran exclaimed together. Ma looked at them. “I think you’re forgetting something,” she said.As they went into the kitchen, Meera thought and thought. What was she forgetting? Oh! Ma needs flour! “Here’s the flour,” said Meera. “Thanks,” said Ma. “But you’re still forgetting something.”“Here are the potatoes,” said Kiran as he handed Ma a couple of potatoes from the vegetable basket. “Thanks, Kiran. But you’re still forgetting something,” said Ma.“Here are the peas,” said Meera and Kiran as they set a bowl of frozen peas on the counter. “Thanks, children. But you’re still forgetting something,” she repeated. They had given Ma flour, potatoes, and peas. What were they forgetting? They thought and thought. And then Kiran smiled! “Yes, please!” said Kiran.“Yes, please. That’s the magic word!” said Ma. Then she fried the samosas in the hot oil. Soon they were munching on the best samosas ever.aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

The Ploughman

The Ploughman

These are the hands whose sturdy labour brings.
The peasant’s food, the golden pomp of kings;
This is the page whose letters shall be seen,
Changed by the sun to words of living green;

This is the scholar whose immortal pen
Spells the first lesson hunger taught to men;
These are the lines that heaven-commanded Toil,
Shows on his deed, - the charter of the soil!

Clever Carla

Clever Carla

In the city of Palermo, Italy, there lived a poor farmer and his young daughter, Carla. The
farmer worked hard to cultivate fine grains and fresh vegetables, which he sold at a nearby
market. Carla helped her father by watering the plants and collecting the grains.
Scene 1
One day the farmer loaded his wagon with grains and hitched up his only horse.
Farmer : Wish me luck, Carla, I am going to the market and hope to return
before dark with my pockets filled with money.
Carla : Good luck, Papa. Do come back soon. I will have the rest of the
grains collected by the time you come back.
Scene 2
In the Street
Merchant : Hey! Wait, my good fellow.
(He picks up a handful of grains and admires them.)
I see you do fine work. Very fine indeed! (He looks at the farmer with
a sly grin.) How much for everything?
Farmer : Twenty copper pieces for everything.
Merchant : It’s a deal! Here is the money. (The merchant climbs on to the wagon,
seats himself next to the farmer.)
Now step down and be on your way.
Farmer : What’s this?
Merchant : Come now, my dear fellow, let us not argue. You did agree to sell
me everything, didn’t you?
Farmer : Well, yes... but....
Merchant : I take you at your word. ‘Everything’ includes your wagon and
your horse. After all, a deal is a deal! If you don’t agree with me,
we will go before the judge. There is one just down the street!
The Corn

The Corn

‘Tell me, grandfather,’ began the king, ‘when and where
was such corn grown? Have you ever bought any like it,
or sown it in your fields?’
And the old man replied:
‘Corn like this used to grow everywhere in my time. I
lived on corn like this in the days of my youth, and fed
others on it. It was such a grain that we used to sow, reap
and thresh.’
And the king asked:
‘Tell me, grandfather, did you buy it anywhere, or did
you grow it all yourself ?’
The old man smiled.
‘In my time,’ he answered, ‘no one ever thought of such
a sin as buying or selling bread; and we knew nothing of
money. Each man had enough corn of his own.’
